The Painted Veil (1934)

Katrin marries Dr. Walter Fane and goes with him to China, where his busy medical practice keeps him away from her. She begins an affair with Jack Townsend, a diplomatic attache, but when Dr. Fane discovers the affair, he tells Katrin that she must go with him into the interior to help stop a cholera epidemic unless Townsend divorces his wife and marries her. Townsend, concerned about his career, does not make a commitment. Katrin goes with Fane, but eventually his attitude changes and he asks for her forgiveness. When his work requires him to leave the city, he allows Katrin to return to safety, but she stays on and becomes a dedicated worker helping the cholera victims. When Dr. Fane returns and finds her, they both realize that they are still in love. While attempting to stop the spread of the disease by burning down a district, Dr. Fane is stabbed by an angry Chinese. At the same time, Townsend arrives and learns that Fane is wounded, but Katrin disregards Townsend completely and goes to her husband, vowing to bring him back to health.
