The Last Hurrah (1958)

Irish-Catholic Mayor Frank Skeffington (Spencer Tracy) runs for one more term, which leads to opposition from the wealthy Protestant members of the Plymouth Club, who oppose his reforms for the poor. Skeffington asks his nephew Adam (Jeffrey Hunter), a neutral sports writer, to witness this "last hurrah", which ultimately ends in defeat despite his opponent, Kevin McCluskey (Charles FitzSimmons), being an incompetent and insignificant puppet. Skeffington has a heart attack following his defeat and dies surrounded by his friends, leaving the world of the film feeling empty without his presence.
