In Paris, American agent Doc Levy survives two assassination attempts. There seems to be a link between the intended death and a notorious Nazi war criminal named Szell who is hiding out in Uruguay. Returning to New York, Doc visits his hero-worshipping younger brother Babe, a student obsessed with notions of winning the Olympic marathon and of proving the innocence of his father, a McCarthy victim who committed suicide. Suddenly, on account of his brother, Babe finds himself drawn into a web of considerable danger and violence.
