While the Patient Slept (1935)

As the ailing family patriarch lies bedridden, his relatives and lawyer gather at the estate, waiting grimly for the inevitable. The tension escalates when a telegram arrives—from Charles, the estranged and disinherited son. The shock causes the old man to collapse, prompting the arrival of Sarah, a sharp-tongued nurse summoned to care for him.

Meanwhile, his remaining sons, Ross and Adolphe, are at each other’s throats, locked in a bitter dispute over a long-standing loan. That very night, Adolphe is found murdered. The police are called, but the investigation is immediately mired in half-truths and secrets—everyone has something to hide.

Suspicion grows when a mysterious stranger is spotted on the grounds, just before the family butler, Grondel, turns up dead. Reporters descend on the scene, churning out sensational headlines, while Inspector O’Leary struggles to make sense of the chaos—with little help from the bumbling Detective Jackson.

Only Sarah, with her biting wit and keen eye, offers O’Leary any real insight—dropping subtle hints that might just lead to the killer hiding in plain sight.
