The Raven (1935)

Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff - The Raven

Dr. Vollin, obsessed with the works of Edgar Allan Poe, builds a dungeon in his basement with torture devices modeled after those in Poe's stories. He falls in love with Jean Thatcher, but her father and fiancé disapprove. Driven mad by his unrequited love, Vollin seeks revenge on those who oppose him. He meets Bateman, a criminal wanting to change his appearance to evade the law, and performs the operation. In return for restoring his appearance, Bateman helps Vollin in his plans for revenge. They abduct Judge Thatcher and Jean, along with her fiancé, and plan to kill them in the dungeon. But Bateman, horrified by their intended fate, frees them and turns on Vollin. In the end, Vollin dies in the same torture device he had intended for his victims.
