Mary Blake arrives in San Francisco, determined to pursue an operatic career, but due to unforeseen circumstances, she is forced to take a job as an entertainer at Blackie Norton's Barbary Coast cafe. Despite her gratitude towards Blackie for his help, she is wary of his intentions and seeks guidance from Father Mullin, an old friend of Blackie's. An aristocrat, Jack Burley, hears her singing and offers to assist in developing her career. Blackie and Burley, now rivals, set out to ruin each other, with Mary's love as the prize for the victor. However, Mary soon discovers that Burley's intentions are not honorable. She enters a contest and wins first prize, which she offers to Blackie as aid. But due to his stubborn pride, he rejects the prize money and Mary. A devastating earthquake destroys the city. Blackie, realizing his love for Mary, searches for her and finds her with Father Mullin, helping the injured and dying. Blackie is grateful that Mary's life was spared.
