John Breen's mother and stepfather were killed in a barge accident, and he is saved by the Lipvitches. He stays in the city to find his real father who had rejected his mother. He becomes successful as a prizefighter and is adopted by Van Horn, who he later discovers is his real father. Becka Lipvitch ends their relationship when Pug Malone advises it could harm his future. John chooses an engineering career over boxing and gets engaged to Van Horn's ward Josephine. Van Horn dies when his ship sinks, and Josephine and Rantoul find comfort in each other's love and get married. John saves Becka from a nightclub owner and narcotics dealer, Flash, and they reconcile.
