The frame story is told by a white father to his son, where he explains that man's closest relative in nature is the orangutan, also known as the "man of the forest." He then recounts the tale of Ali and his son Bin, who live in a jungle village in Sumatra and hunt together. While out hunting, Ali hopes to shoot a tiger, but two orangutans, Tua and his baby Rango, cross their path, and Rango is almost attacked by the tiger. As Ali sets a trap for the tiger, the orangutans sneak into his hut and feast on his stored goods. More orangutans soon join in, ransacking the hut. Upon discovering the mess, Ali captures Rango and chains him up. Later, when Tua is threatened by a black panther, Ali comes to his aid.

During the night, a tiger invades their camp, but Rango manages to warn Bin in time for him to scare it away. At dawn, Tua returns to the hut for breakfast, while Bin tends to the water buffaloes. When a tiger kills a deer, the orangutans scream in warning and flee. Two male tigers appear and chase Bin, Rango, and Tua. While Rango is killed by the tiger, the water buffalo puts up a fierce fight and kills the predator.
