This adaptation of the Émile Zola character was meant to showcase Sten's potential as the answer to Greta Garbo, as she was trained and groomed by Goldwyn. Despite a significant investment, support from William Randolph Hearst, and a successful opening week at Radio City Music Hall, Sten failed to live up to expectations. Her training by Goldwyn is mentioned in the 1934 Cole Porter song "Anything Goes" from the musical of the same name.
