I Love Trouble (1948)

A wealthy man hires detective Franchot Tone to investigate his wife's past. During his investigation, Tone discovers that the wife had been a dancer who left her hometown with an actor. However, the actor is killed before he can reveal anything substantial. With the assistance of a showgirl, the detective uncovers that the wife had used stolen papers to attend college after stealing $40,000 from the night club where she was employed. As the investigation continues, the detective eventually learns that the husband had murdered his wife after discovering her checkered past to avoid a scandal. Furthermore, he had hired the detective to implicate himself for the crime.
