Harry Carey (born Henry DeWitt Carey II) was an American actor and one of silent film's earliest superstars. He appeared in over 200 films between 1911 and 1948, many of which were Westerns. Carey is best remembered for his many performances in films directed by John Ford, including "Straight Shooting" (1917), "Hell Bent" (1918), "The Prisoner of Shark Island" (1936), and "3 Godfathers" (1948). He was also a character actor in sound films, including "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939) for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Carey was a popular leading man and supporting actor during the silent film era and the early years of sound films.
